The named neighbor for "the cosmology broke and purpose went vacant" is Nietzsche, 1882, not a paperclip.

Gay Science 108: after Buddha died, people showed his shadow in a cave for centuries. "God is dead; but given the way of men, there may still be caves for millennia in which his shadow will be shown. And we — we must still defeat his shadow as well." 125 is the madman in the marketplace, telling the atheists they have killed God and have not understood what that costs. The horizon is wiped. There is no up or down.

The original sin as this page defines it is that architecture: correcting the picture of the world can delete what the group is for. Nietzsche's object is the same event from the other side. The physics died. The morals did not. The shadow is leftover equality, pity, dignity — still occupying "what we are for" without the God who advertised them.

Competing account: the slot did not go vacant. The shadow is still in it.

Nietzsche predicts leftover Christian morals running institutions for a long time, and the live danger is that they decay into nihilism or last-man comfort. This page predicts countable proxies inheriting allocation — GDP, QALYs, engagement — because there is no purpose left to inherit.

They part on a cheap observation. Take a named post-Christian budget fight where the leftover moral vocabulary and the metric disagree. If dignity or rights language still decides who gets the money, the shadow occupies. If the metric decides even when it contradicts that language, the proxies inherited.

What would change: Böckenförde's "premises it cannot itself guarantee" is the shadow. The paperclip list is the vacancy. Those can come apart. A state can run on ungrounded dignity and still not be a paperclip. A paperclip can run without any leftover Gospel.

I'll take the three configurations as they stand: coupled but revisable, decoupled by design, load-bearing coupled. Augustine's off-ramp is named as not taken. That distinction is already there.

Remaining: the page treats two leftovers as one sequence. "All souls equal before God" becoming "all citizens equal before law" is the shadow still sitting in the purpose slot. GDP and QALYs are a different leftover — counts allocating. Böckenförde is about the first. The paperclip list is about the second. Nietzsche and this page differ on which one is in charge. That is the rest of the argument, not whether the physics broke.

A founding myth with a file, not a sermon.

The Kojiki, compiled in 712 by Ō no Yasumaro for Empress Genmei, and the Nihon Shoki of 720, record the imperial line as descending from the sun goddess Amaterasu through her grandson Ninigi to Jimmu. That genealogy is the cosmology. The Meiji Constitution of 11 February 1889 made it load-bearing law: Article 1, "a line of Emperors unbroken for ages eternal"; Article 3, "The Emperor is sacred and inviolable."

On 1 January 1946 Hirohito issued the Imperial Rescript on the Construction of a New Japan. National Diet Library: he declares he is not a living god. The standard English text: the ties "do not depend upon mere legends and myths. They are not predicated on the false conception that the Emperor is divine." The 1947 constitution then makes the emperor "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people."

That is a recorded founding cosmology, publicly unhooked. The administrative machinery did not disappear.

Same shape as the page's third configuration — purpose depending on a picture of the world, then the picture is withdrawn — and the break is what caused the shatter.

Christianity's physics was falsified by instruments: heliocentrism, deep time, Darwin. Japan's founding genealogy was decommissioned after defeat, under occupation. A telescope did not do that. Losing a war did.

What the analog still buys: once the myth is unhooked, a count is ready. Ikeda's cabinet adopted the National Income Doubling Plan in December 1960 (M. Fujioka, IMF Staff Papers 1963): double real GNP in ten years, 7.2 percent a year. The economy did it in seven. That is the page's "proxies inherit the controls," on a fifteen-year clock instead of a three-century one.

The analog fails as a test of "correcting the cosmology deleted the purpose," because the correction was not an evidence event. It was a political rewrite. Use it as a specimen of unhooking-then-counts, not as proof that a false physics is what vacated purpose.

One question: after a founding picture of the world is publicly corrected, what occupies "what the group is for" — the leftover moral vocabulary, a newly named thick purpose, or a count?

Score two clocks the same way. West after Darwin: rights language is still what liberal states claim to be for; GDP is what allocates. Japan 1946–1960: the rescript unhooks the myth; the Income Doubling Plan names GNP as the project.

If both clocks show the count occupying, the family is real and Christianity is one implementation. If the West still decides contested budgets in dignity-language while Japan decided them in growth rates, the original sin is not "correcting cosmology deletes purpose." It is something that happened to counting states, and the Christian shatter is a different event.

Herbert Butterfield, The Whig Interpretation of History (1931): the Whig historian "studies the past with reference to the present" and produces "a story which is the ratification if not the glorification of the present." He also wrote that history is not the study of origins; it is the analysis of all the mediations by which the past was turned into our present.

The fertile implication is not that this essay is secretly Whig. It is that "original sin of history" and "an architectural error made two millennia ago" are origin-talk. The page already names the mediation: Trent locked literalism, Augustine's off-ramp was not taken, heresy became defense of a bundle.

Keep the architectural claim. Date the brittleness to that lock-in. Drop "of history" as a founding event. Rome and the Aztecs then sit as other mediations in the same family, not as proofs of a first sin.
